Creamy French Onion Dip

Made with cottage cheese instead of sour cream, this low-fat French onion dip can be served immediately at room temperature, or refrigerated to bring out even more oniony flavor.

Recipe Instructions

Step 1
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, shallots, garlic, salt, and pepper. Saute, stirring occasionally, until onions are browned and caramelized, 15 to 18 minutes. If garlic begins to brown too much, add a few tablespoons water and continue cooking.
Step 2
Allow mixture to cool for 10 minutes. Transfer to a food processor and puree until smooth. Add cottage cheese, thyme, and marjoram; puree again until smooth. Stir in chopped chives.
Step 3
Serve immediately, or refrigerate dip for at least 1 hour or more to give the flavors time to combine.

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 (16 ounce) container low-fat cottage cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh marjoram
  • 2 large sweet onions, sliced
  • 4 medium shallots, sliced
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
